During his official visit to Moscow, he indicated that there are no disputes between Sudan and Russia concerning this matter.
Sharif emphasized that the proposed naval base would not endanger any nation’s security or Sudan’s autonomy, comparing the presence of foreign military bases in Djibouti as a similar situation. He noted that the agreement previously signed with Russia had not encountered any issues since its inception.
In a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, Sharif stated, “We have reached a mutual understanding on this issue. Therefore, the matter is very simple. … We have agreed on everything,” highlighting the consensus between the two nations. The groundwork for this collaboration was laid with a preliminary agreement signed in November 2020, which outlined the establishment of a Russian naval logistics hub in Sudan.
The ongoing discussions between Sudan and Russia regarding a naval base along the Red Sea are characterized by a lack of disagreements and a shared understanding of mutual benefits.
