The State of Qatar recently participated in a session titled “Strengthening Community Mechanisms to Prevent Violent Extremism,” commemorating the third anniversary of the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism. This event was facilitated by the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) at its base in Geneva, with Qatar’s Acting Charge d’Affaires, Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, representing the nation.
In her opening statement, Al Suwaidi highlighted the establishment of the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism via United Nations General Assembly Resolution 77/243, adopted on December 20, 2022. The resolution’s aim is to enhance awareness of violent extremism risks and bolster global efforts to combat this issue, highlighting the pivotal role of international governmental organizations in prevention strategies.
Al Suwaidi emphasized the significance of this year coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, which promotes peace, security, and human rights while combating poverty and injustice. She clarified that violent extremism undermines these essential values and stressed the importance of addressing this global challenge.
She acknowledged the vital contribution of GCERF in building the capacities of communities to combat violent extremism. Al Suwaidi reiterated Qatar’s strong condemnation of all forms of violent extremism and its commitment to addressing the underlying factors contributing to violence. She advocated for direct engagement with affected communities and investment in their potential.
Notably, Qatar was among the initial supporters of the establishment of GCERF in 2014 and played a significant role in proposing the UN resolution that established February 12 as the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism. Al Suwaidi pointed out that preventing violent extremism requires a comprehensive approach focusing on root causes, including education, poverty alleviation, and enhancing community resilience.
She further clarified that combating violent extremism is a collective responsibility shared across nations, emphasizing that violent extremism transcends geographical and religious boundaries. A united global stance and extensive international cooperation are crucial for effectively addressing this issue.
