Colombian President Gustavo Petro asked Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for assistance in securing the release of Elkana Bohbot, a Colombian-Israeli kidnapped by Hamas. Petro’s request comes after confirmation of Bohbot’s survival and aligns with ongoing hostilities and negotiations involving hostages in Gaza. Petro’s diplomatic outreach underscores the evolving relationships in the region.
On Thursday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro requested Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to help secure the release of Elkana Bohbot, a Colombian-Israeli man kidnapped by Hamas during the attacks on the Reim music festival on October 7, 2023. Petro stated his personal rapport with the Emir, indicating his request for mediation through a message shared on X, following discussions in Doha during his official visit.
Qatar has previously played an instrumental role in mediating negotiations that culminated in a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of other hostages. Bohbot’s partner, Rebecca Gonzalez, confirmed his wellbeing, urging Petro to engage Qatarin diplomatic efforts for his release. She referenced testimony from a recently freed hostage, reinforcing Bohbot’s condition after 500 days in captivity.
Petro granted Colombian nationality to Bohbot in November 2023, signaling efforts towards advocating for his freedom. Earlier, in January, he had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to assist in negotiations for the release of hostages taken by Hamas. Meanwhile, an existing ceasefire agreement stipulates that more hostages will be released from Gaza soon in exchange for Palestinian detainees.
To date, 21 individuals have returned safely to Israel, including five Thais. However, Petro’s stance has changed regarding Israel, as he severed diplomatic ties on May 1, 2024, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.
In summary, President Gustavo Petro of Colombia is seeking mediation from Qatar for the release of Elkana Bohbot, who has been held captive by Hamas. This comes after confirmation of Bohbot’s survival from his partner and as part of ongoing discussions for hostage negotiations. Petro’s diplomatic efforts further highlight his complex relationship with Israel and ongoing hostage release dynamics in the region.
