Kasukuwere Declares End is Near for Mnangagwa’s Presidency

Former Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere claims President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidency is nearing its end due to lost support from key war veterans. As war veterans, led by Blessed Geza, prepare for a nationwide shutdown to pressure Mnangagwa, public caution remains amid their call for action. The political landscape is further complicated by proposals to extend Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028, challenging the ambitions of his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga.

In a recent declaration, former Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere stated that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is nearing the end of his presidency. Having self-exiled in South Africa since the 2017 military coup that overthrew Robert Mugabe, Kasukuwere emphasized that Mnangagwa has lost essential support, particularly from war veterans, an influential faction within the ruling party.

Kasukuwere noted, “Once those war veterans say your job is done, that’s the end. He’s hanging around, but the truth of the matter is he’s gone.” This warning comes as a group of outspoken war veterans, led by Blessed Geza, is reportedly planning a nationwide shutdown aimed at pressuring Mnangagwa to resign.

The situation escalated when Geza, who faces charges of incitement and public violence, announced their intention to mobilize the populace against Mnangagwa. He stated, “We have called upon Mnangagwa to step down and immediately, but he ignored. The people are going to force him to step down in line with the provisions of the constitution.”

Despite their push against the president, there is notable caution among the public, who are reluctant to engage in Zanu PF factional disputes after supporting the military coup, which still led to the party maintaining power. Geza assured, “All stakeholders from various parties and civic groups will be consulted on every step we take.”

The war veterans plan to rally support for this national shutdown, urging citizens to prepare for action without specifying a date. Geza concluded, “Fellow Zimbabweans get ready for action, be ready for action once you receive the signal.”

Amidst these developments, there is internal pressure from Mnangagwa’s supporters for him to extend his presidency beyond 2028, a move deemed unlikely given legal constraints that would necessitate public referendums. This push could significantly impact the political ambitions of Constantino Chiwenga, Mnangagwa’s deputy.

The current political landscape in Zimbabwe indicates a significant challenge to Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidency from within the ruling Zanu PF party, particularly from war veterans led by Blessed Geza. As calls for a national shutdown intensify, the unity of various stakeholders appears crucial in shaping the next steps. The public’s cautious position reflects past experiences with Zanu PF’s power struggles. Should Mnangagwa’s supporters succeed in extending his term, it may alter the dynamics of Zimbabwean politics considerably.
