Jayapal Applauds Extended Temporary Protected Status for Immigrants

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal commended the DHS for extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans, Sudanese, Ukrainians, and Salvadorans. This policy enables around 940,000 individuals to legally reside and work in the U.S. given unsafe conditions in their home countries. Jayapal advocates for further extensions and improvements to immigration pathways amid political pressures to restrict options.

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) praised the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for its announcement to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Venezuela, Sudan, Ukraine, and El Salvador. She emphasized that the U.S. has a duty to support those fleeing violence and crises. Jayapal expressed gratitude toward the Biden-Harris Administration for this essential move, which she has long supported.

Jayapal pointed out the significance of TPS as a vital legal pathway amid threats from the incoming Trump administration to restrict immigration routes. TPS allows eligible individuals to legally reside and work in the U.S. when they cannot safely return to their home countries. She called on the Administration to continue extending TPS to all qualified nations in need.

The extension of TPS will benefit approximately 600,000 Venezuelans, 1,900 Sudanese, 103,700 Ukrainians, and 234,000 Salvadorans, allowing them to re-register with the criteria involving strict national security screenings. Specifically, TPS has been extended for Venezuela until October 2, 2026, Sudan and Ukraine through October 19, 2026, and El Salvador until September 9, 2026.

The statement by Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal highlights the critical role of Temporary Protected Status in ensuring governmental support for those facing turmoil in their home countries. The extended TPS provisions provide these communities with a measure of stability and safety while advocating for broader immigration reforms. The importance of maintaining legal pathways for these immigrants is underscored by the current political landscape, stressing the need for responsible governance regarding immigration policies.
