Ethiopia is dedicated to ensuring that Africa has adequate representation in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), working in collaboration with both continental and external partners. Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, noted the ongoing 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa, focusing on Africa’s global representation.
During the session, members of the African Union Peace and Security Council were elected. This council, which comprises 15 members, is tasked with addressing peace and security across Africa. Ethiopia has been elected for a three-year term in this council from 2025 to 2027, highlighting its dedication to addressing continental peace and security issues.
Ambassador Nebiat emphasized Ethiopia’s longstanding advocacy for peace, participating in significant peacekeeping missions under both the UN and the African Union. He remarked on the necessity for member countries to work collectively to promote peace and resolve conflicts, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 objectives.
Discussing Africa’s representation in the UNSC, he pointed out the current absence of African members, which has become a pressing concern. Ethiopia holds a consistent view on advocating for African representation in this critical global body, recognizing the collective efforts of the Organization of African Unity and the African Union.
Ambassador Nebiat concluded by stating that it is crucial to achieve equitable representation in the UNSC, emphasizing Ethiopia’s commitment and engagement with like-minded nations to advance this agenda.
Ethiopia’s commitment to promoting Africa’s representation in the UNSC is reflected in its participation in key peace and security initiatives. Through collaborative efforts within the African Union and with global partners, Ethiopia aims to position Africa appropriately on the world stage. The country’s election to the AU Peace and Security Council further underscores its historic role in advocating for regional stability and collective security across the continent.
