Botswana has been invited to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, spearheaded by a Ukrainian delegation led by Daria Herasymchuk. The initiative focuses on addressing the abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia and seeks support from Botswana’s government and society. The delegation included returned Ukrainian children who shared their traumatic experiences, emphasizing the need for collaboration in humanity’s efforts to prevent such crimes.
Botswana has been invited to join the coalition aimed at the return of Ukrainian children, according to the Ukrainian Presidential Office. A Ukrainian delegation, led by Daria Herasymchuk, the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights and Child Rehabilitation, visited Botswana as part of the Bring Kids Back UA initiative. During their discussions with Botswana’s officials, the delegation presented data regarding the systematic abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia, emphasizing the need for Botswana’s support.
Herasymchuk urged government officials and civil society members to back the Ukrainian initiatives aimed at rescuing children. She highlighted the significance of Botswana’s involvement in the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children and advocacy within the African nation, seeking collaborative efforts across the continent. Notably, the Ukrainian delegates included Ivan and Vlad, two children who had previously been returned home and shared their harrowing experiences with local media and students.
After the occupation of Kherson, Vlad faced enforced abduction to a camp where he experienced isolation and torture. Ivan, orphaned and attempting to escape Mariupol with a friend, was detained and subsequently transported to Donetsk, with plans to place him into Russian families. The delegation also screened the film “Abducted Childhood” and engaged in discussions addressing crimes against Ukrainian children.
“We are working to ensure that such crimes never happen again. Together with our international partners, we must bring back every abducted child,” noted Herasymchuk. Launched in February 2024 and co-chaired by Ukraine and Canada, the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children aims to provide a structured response to this critical issue.
