On February 8, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, extended his congratulations to Grenada’s Foreign Minister, Joseph Andall, in recognition of Grenada’s 51st Independence Day. He expressed India’s determination to enhance bilateral cooperation through a post on X, stating, “Congratulate FM Joseph Andall, the Government and people of Grenada on the 51st anniversary of their Independence. Will continue efforts to strengthen our bilateral and multilateral cooperation.” A supportive image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell accompanied the message.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that Prime Minister Modi had previously met Prime Minister Mitchell at the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Guyana on November 20 of the previous year. During this summit, discussions revolved around development cooperation in crucial sectors such as ICT, healthcare, capacity building, and climate change resiliency. Mitchell expressed gratitude for India’s vaccine support during the COVID-19 pandemic and commendations for India’s leading role in the Global South’s initiatives.
In an additional diplomatic exchange, Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, welcomed Gita Kishorekumar Pasupuleti, Grenada’s first Non-Resident High Commissioner to India, in New Delhi. Margherita’s post on X included, “Delighted to meet with H.E. Mr. Gita Kishorekumar Pasupuleti, newly appointed and the first Non-Resident High Commissioner of Grenada to India. Discussed ways to strengthen and advance our bilateral relations.”
The historical relationship between India and Grenada dates back to May 1, 1857, when the ship “Maidstone” brought the first Indian indentured workers to Grenada, then a British territory. Following independence in 1974, 3,200 Indians migrated between 1857 and 1885, with some returning to India after their indentureship ended in 1890, while others integrated into Grenadian society.
India and Grenada share a longstanding relationship rooted in their historical migration ties, beginning in the mid-19th century. The two nations have engaged in strategic discussions on multiple occasions to advance cooperation in various sectors, especially in healthcare and climate change resilience. Additionally, the appointment of Grenada’s first Non-Resident High Commissioner to India marks a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.
