Yayra Koku, the NIA’s CEO, has proposed integrating the Ghana Card with Mobile Money and bank accounts while also suggesting it could replace driver’s licenses. The enhancements aim to simplify payment processes, speed up card replacement, and enable online passport applications, ultimately improving user convenience.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Yayra Koku, announced plans to augment the functionality of the Ghana Card. This initiative aims to synchronize the card with Mobile Money (MoMo) and bank accounts, potentially allowing it to serve as a substitute for drivers’ licenses in Ghana.
Koku elaborated on the benefits, stating, “Imagine linking your Ghana Card to your MoMo and bank accounts so you can pay for goods and services without knowing the vendor’s phone number or MoMo details.” This integration would streamline financial transactions for users across various platforms.
He further mentioned that in case of loss, replacing a card could become significantly easier. “Imagine your card goes missing, but you simply walk into a booth, pay, provide your fingerprint, and your replacement card is printed on the spot without having to visit the NIA office and wait in a long queue,” he explained.
The acting CEO also highlighted the convenience of applying for passports with the Ghana Card, stating, “Consider applying for a passport from the comfort of your home with your Ghana Card, then walking in to collect it or having it delivered via GhanaPost.” This could drastically reduce the time and effort needed for passport applications.
Moreover, Koku envisioned online appointment bookings for the Ghana Card, allowing applicants to submit details and schedule interviews easily. He noted, “Think of linking your Ghana Card to toll booth apps for seamless payments as you pass through…” enhancing accessibility for users and improving service efficiency.
The Ghana Card serves as a national identification document for Ghanaians and eligible foreigners. Koku’s proposed integrations are expected to revolutionize how citizens interact with governmental and financial services, making processes more user-friendly and efficient.
