Bor Gatwech Kuany, a former senior official of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), has announced his support for the opposition group, the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (R-SPLM). His resignation from SPLM was attributed to perceived negligence and the government’s inability to enact key reforms stated in the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
R-SPLM, which is a splinter group from President Salva Kiir’s SPLM, operates under the United People’s Alliance (UPA), previously known as the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA). The UPA is currently in discussions with the government through the Kenya-led Tumaini Initiative, aimed at establishing enduring peace within South Sudan.
In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, Kuany remarked that South Sudan is at a crucial juncture, emphasizing the need for united voices advocating for critical reforms. He noted, “Due to the suffering our people are going through, we should find a way of rescuing the country and the people. And this is what Real SPLM and UPA are doing.”
Kuany pointed out that the implementation of past agreements has been severely inadequate, with only 10% of the second agreement fulfilled since the initial one collapsed in 2016. He called for cooperation among leaders from both the government and opposition sectors to mitigate the suffering of their people.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Kuany stressed that it is the responsibility of every nationalist to prevent the nation from facing complete economic failure. He stated he is joining the opposition not for personal gain but to align with those wanting to improve the nation’s condition, as suffering is felt by all, regardless of social status.
He concluded by emphasizing the necessity of a political system that prioritizes the needs of the populace, saying, “Fundamentally, there is a need for a political dispensation that puts the interests of the people first.”
The conflict in South Sudan has necessitated various peace agreements, notably the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), established in 2018. The SPLM is the ruling party, led by President Salva Kiir, while several splinter groups exist, including R-SPLM. The UPA engages in peace negotiations with the government in an effort to address ongoing humanitarian crises and establish political stability.
